Personal: New website

Dave de Fijter - 27/02/2008 - 21:33

Hi and welcome to my new website.

For years I wanted a decent website for my own, but I didn't had the motivation to build a new site with PHP re-inventing the wheel for yet another time. Of course I could have used a PHP framework to make it easier or a Wordpress install to be ready in 5 minutes; But I didn't because it would be just like any other site and I know I can do better. I started a little something in PHP5 but once I had build a part and noticed that my host was still running PHP4 I just left it like that.

My recent discovery of Django changed all that. Because of the brilliant, quick, DRY solutions in that framework a web application can be made in a snap but as custom as you like. Django was love at first sight and I immediately started building this website in it.

Once the first Beta was ready i noticed a problem: Hosting. My current host didn't support Django or even Python and it is difficult to find a hosting service that does. I could have chosen a VPS or my own dedicated server but I didn't like the fact that I should play my own system administrator on those systems and most of them where to expensive for my simple private little website. Then I Came across Webfaction webhosting; It had it all. A lot of disk space, bandwidth and full shell access with the possibility to add applications like Django, Ruby on Rails, Turbogears etc. to your personal account. And the best part: It isn't even expensive. I bought an account for 5 years and installed Django, Subversion and Trac on it. Works like a charm! Now my site is hosted here and you can see it in full glory.

Now this site is live, I will keep adding new features. Plans are already there for a photo album, portfolio, contact form and some experiments. So visit this site from time to time.
